(1)     HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN – Ethan, Ellen

The Coalition spoke with Ellen Kahn of the HRC Foundation’s Family Project regarding HRC’s decision not to oppose passage of a non-inclusive ENDA bill. There was some initial discussion and question/answer period (see, attached, a paraphrased, brief list of the opinions/concerns various SSC members expressed and also find attached Ellen’s statement from HRC). The Coalition has decided tentatively to – at least -- send a formal, strongly worded letter from the Coalition to be drafted by Ethan addressing the HRC National Board objecting to HRC’s decision. It will be available at the February meeting for people’s signatures.

We also request that everyone involved with the Coalition write and send letters of reaction to the HRC’s decision. Please send copies of these letters to Ethan (ethan@safeschoolscoalition.org) so that he can attach them to the formal Safe Schools letter.

We discussed four options at this point:

a.       Revoke HRC’s membership in the SSC

b.       Send a letter of sanction to HRC

c.       Send a letter of disagreement to HRC

d.       Take no action at this time.

It was decided to table a decision until the February 19 SSC meeting, to allow individuals and member organizations to consider what you wish SSC to do. There will also be an HRC representative – from the 501(c)4 part of HRC -- who was involved in the initial decision making process about the non-inclusive ENDA bill at the next SSC meeting. If folks are unable to attend the next SSC meeting please send your input about this decision to Beth Reis (http://www.safeschoolscoalition.org/contact/?id=4)

(2)     WASHINGTON STATE LEGISLATIVE AGENDAS – Frieda, Marsha

At December’s meeting Frieda and Marsha agreed to investigate what the 2008 legislative priorities of some member organizations and other LGBTQA groups are. Frieda reported that right now the Washington State Department of Health is required by law to apply for Federal abstinence-only-until-marriage education dollars and Planned Parenthood is supporting a bill that will change “shall” to “may”. Frieda will fill us in on what the bill # is for that legislative agenda item.  None of these legislative initiatives is SSC generated or specifically about the needs of LGBTQ students, so Beth would like folks to be thinking about what we would like to put forward in the 2009 legislative session. Whenever someone is ready to step up and lead an ad hoc committee including some of our agencies and some legislators, which could start by examining legislation other states have passed or considered, please either come to (or call in to) an SSC meeting or let Beth know.(http://www.safeschoolscoalition.org/contact/?id=4) Beth also passed along the concern, raised to her by SSC volunteer Rachel Smith-Mosel, that the Washington State social studies standards ought to be LGBT-inclusive. Frieda explained that they are quite vague and open to inclusive or non-inclusive discretion on the parts of districts and even, Kyle pointed out, individual teachers. Anyone willing to address the concern with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) please contact Rachel: bikefamilymom@comcast.net for advice about what to say and who to contact.

(3)     NO NAME-CALLING WEEK – Beth

As we had agreed in several previous years to become a partner organization with GLSEN for No Name-Calling Week, we renewed our support again this year. More info: www.nonamecallingweek.org

It is a time commitment of 20-30 hours or so in January or February each year and then just a couple of hours a month maximum, logging emailed and mailed organizational memberships, forwarding checks to our accountant at Lifelong, and reporting in at monthly SSC meetings. PLEASE think about stepping up. Let Beth know.(http://www.safeschoolscoalition.org/contact/?id=4)

b)       Ethan and Dream are beginning to assemble advisory groups of youth and parents, respectively, to improve upon the relevant web pages. More to report … To volunteer …

c)       A fan of the SSC web site sent us feedback critical of how we describe Father Mychal Judge, the gay NYC Fire Department chaplain who died on 9-11 in the World Trade Center. How out was he really? How much of an activist for HIV services and LGBTQ equality? Heather Carter agreed to do a little research and draft new language re: the hero card and the lesson planning in which we mention Fr. Judge; Shannon agreed to be a send set of eyes.

d)       See end of minutes for full December & 2007 annual web report.

e)       Adrienne Woody is looking for volunteers to help with her website project. If you’re a parent or guardian with opinions about how to improve the parent pages on the SSC web site and you’d be willing to meet in person or by phone, contact her: http://www.safeschoolscoalition.org/contact/?id=23 . You do NOT need to live in Washington State.

December 2007 and 2007 Annual Web Stie Report

Gabi Clayton, Web Spinner

Tuesday, January 8, 2008 email received:

The Message: AWESOME SITE AND RESOURCES!!!!!
Over the years I have looked for LGBT friendly kid books and other resources to share with my children's schools, and have never seen anything as comprehensive and accessible as your site.

YOU ROCK!

My son's principal (in San Diego, Ca) is willing to do a training with staff after I discussed my son's perception of pervasive anti gay attitudes and lack of prevention or awareness by staff. Your site will be a great resource, and I will be spreading the word to individuals and organizations. keep it up.

I got the sender’s permission to post it on the website without the included email address, simply identified as SC. It’s on the home page under “WOW! Testimonial” and I would love to start collecting others we can share too. If someone needs that email address for a coalition reason let me know.

I changed the blackboard image on all the SSC pages. The old one looked like this:

And the new one looks like this:

We have ten songs on the website now, and are still looking for more.

Beth asked if we can post videos from places like YouTube. Yes, if they have an imbed code.
