Dear Safe Schools Coalition Members and Friends:
It's that time of year. Workplace giving time. And Thanksgiving's around the corner.
Many of you will be asked soon to consider participating in charitable giving via payroll deduction for the coming year. Safe Schools needs you!
Did you know that the Safe Schools Coalition has almost ZERO overhead (our member orgs cover almost all costs and we have no office or staff of our own)? So nearly every penny you give to the
Coalition goes to the real work. To providing the web site, the listserve, the training, the publications, the technical assistance, and the intervention services for students in crisis. We get very little foundation support
and no corporate support. We count on volunteers and on member organizations' dues and individuals' and families' donations (and occasional fundraising events) to keep the Coalition afloat. You count on us; can we count on you?
Where else could a principal call -- besides SSC -- when he is worrying about how to make an overnight field trip safe for an openly lesbian student?
Where else could a parent turn -- besides SSC -- for advice about how to choose a kindergarten for her gender expansive child?
Where else could a student go for help -- besides SSC -- when graffiti about him is not cleaned up no matter how many times he tells teachers?
Where else could a teacher call -- besides SSC -- to talk about responsible, age-appropriate, pedagogically defensible ways of coming out?
Where else could a school board member look -- besides SSC -- for sample anti-bullying and non-discrimination policies that include sexual orientation and gender identity?
Where else could a group in South Africa look -- besides SSC -- for training in how to intervene in bias-based bullying?
Where else could a school counselor in rural South Dakota go -- besides SSC -- for resources about preventing LGBTQ youth suicide?
There are three easy ways to donate to the Safe Schools Coalition.
(2) You can give via payroll deduction! Why should you consider giving to LGBTQ charities at work?
It's really important that our workplaces know the size of the LGBTQ & allied community and it's important that groups like the United Way hear our priorities. Giving through payroll deduction is one important way to tell them what
really matters to you. No matter where you live in the United States, if your workplace offers "United Way" as an option, you can donate to us through United Way ... but
only if you specifically designate us ("Safe Schools Coalition") for a "directed gift."
To designate us, write in "Safe Schools Coalition c/o Lifelong AIDS Alliance." (If your employer asks for our Federal Tax Identification #, we are legally a project of our fiscal sponsor, the Lifelong AIDS Alliance, and the tax ID # is
91-1215715.)
(3) Many businesses offer matching gift programs.
It is easy to take advantage of this employee benefit that doubles the impact of your contribution. Check with your Human
Resources department to see if your company provides a matching gift program
If you appreciate the listserve,
if you value the web site,
if you are glad that we offer school boards and legislators technical assistance all over the world,
if you have referred a student or family for intervention services,
if you have felt that our trainers made your district or school or classroom a safer place,
if your LOCAL safe schools coalition looks to the Safe Schools Coalition for technical assistance,
please support YOUR Safe Schools Coalition today.
