If you haven’t ever heard from a gender expansive child what their experience might be like at school this is a
particularly important speech for you.
Hear Director and Producer Lana Wachowski (the
Matrix series, V for Vendetta, Speed Racer, and now
Cloud Atlas, released today) talk about the journey.
The speech is 31 minutes long, and as my friend and colleague, Tracy Flynn, says,
you don’t want to miss a minute of it.

(2) Thoughts, Books, & Links in observance of National Bullying Prevention
Month (almost over) from Mike Donlin, Program Supervisor of the OSPI Safety Center
Mike sent this to the members of the WA State Bullying Prevention Work Group. He graciously said I could share it
with y’all:
1.
Thoughts for the week:
a.
If you see bullying,
recognize it for what it is.
b.
Report it. Say something to someone you trust.
To someone who can help.
i. Remember: “Tattling”/“telling”.
ii. “Tattling” is done to get somebody into trouble.
iii. “Telling” (reporting) is to help somebody out.
c.
If you see bullying, don’t join in.
Refuse to participate.
d.
And if it happens to you,
don’t retaliate.
2.
Cyberbullying Thoughts:
a.
Think before you post.
b.
Remember: it’s
permanent!
c.
Remember: it’s all
public.
3.
A few great books to consider: (Linked to Lesson Plans)
a.
Touching Spirit Bear, Ben Mikaelson
b.
My Secret Bully, Trudy Ludwig
c.
The Revealers, Doug Wilhelm
d.
The One Hundred Dresses, Joshua Kravinsky

Share
your ideas
with colleagues across the state! Really! Is there something you, your school or your district is doing that you want to share with others? A program, a set of materials, parent information, a document you have developed….. If so, please let me know.
We’ll pass it along. See the “District Created Resources” links on our HIB page.
And remember to check out the
Bullying and Harassment and
Cyberbullying pages on the
Safety Center web site.
Thanks,
Mike

About the research …
A new Gallup survey, touted as the largest of its kind, estimates that 3.4
percent of American adults identify [to researchers] as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
David Crary, AP National
Seattle Times,
October 18, 2012
“A new Gallup survey, touted as the largest of its kind, estimates that 3.4 percent of American adults identify as
lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. The findings, released Thursday, were based on interviews with more than 121,000 people. Gallup said it is the largest study ever aimed at calculating the nation's LGBT population. The report's lead author, demographer
Gary Gates of the UCLA School of Law's Williams Institute, said he hoped the findings would help puncture some stereotypes about gays and lesbians while illustrating the diversity of their community. ‘Contemporary media often think of LGBT people as disproportionately
white, male, urban and pretty wealthy,’ he said. ‘But this data reveal that relative to the general population, the LGBT population has a larger proportion of nonwhite people and clearly is not overly wealthy.’ According to the survey …”

(6) Sex Ed publisher seeks input from schools (brief online survey)
Good Afternoon,
For the first time in our 28 year history, CAS-Carrera will be publishing our middle school family life and sexuality education
curriculum, available for purchase in 2013. As a person deeply devoted to serving the whole child, I value your opinion and would be grateful if you shared your views on family life and sexuality education by answering a few key questions. The answers you
provide will help us tailor our curriculum to meet the needs of the young people you serve. The survey will take up to 10 minutes. As a token of my gratitude I would like to provide you with a signed copy of Lessons for Lifeguards: Working with Teens When
the Message is Hope.
