(3) Safe Place program in King County (WA)

I wanted to get the word out about Safe Place.  Did you know that YouthCare is the lead organization that is supporting the Safe Place project?  With collaboration from Friends of Youth and Auburn Youth Resources we now have a program that can potentially get kids off the street faster!

What is Safe Place you ask….. Safe Place is program where any youth from ages 12-17 can walk onto any king county metro bus and say “I need help or a safe place” that metro bus driver will then call their dispatcher who will then call the Safe Place coordinator.  The coordinator will then arrange a place to pick up the youth and transport them to the nearest shelter (our shelter, SKYS, youth haven, or cocoon house).  At the shelter the coordinator will work with the youth to access their needs and provide services accordingly.

As of right now we are talking about 1,700 busses that are active places to get help!  It is our plan that the Safe Place sites in the future will also include 24 hour stationary spots.

Safe Place also has a text feature that allows any youth, where ever they are in the US, to text the word HELP along with their location (street, city, state) to 69866.  Within in minutes you will receive a text message that will give you the closest safe place site/shelter and a 1-800 number that you can call!

Thanks everyone!  Please get the word out to all the youth you work with!! If you need any flyers or would like me to come to your branch to talk about Safe Place please don’t hesitate to call or email!  Thanks
