Dear Safe Schools Coalition Members and Friends:

(1)  Anti-bullying program turns bystanders into “up standers”

(2)  True Colors Residence-Cyndi Lauper opening a homeless a shelter for LGBT youth

(3) Stand Up Against Bullying Week-September 12-16

(4)  LGBT medical issues get little focus in medical school training programs.

(1)   Pineville Elementary is participating in a pilot program to teach children to address bullying as bystanders.  Using a program developed by Operation Respect, this program aims to change the witness of  an act bullying into an ally for change.  See more of this story.

(2)    Cyndi Lauper is opening a residence for homeless LGBT youth in New York City.  Lauper decided to partner to create the project because of the city's large number of LGBT homeless youth and following reports of verbal and physical abuse against them.  Read more.

(3)   Mayor Mike Rawlings proclaims September 12-16 Stand Up Against Bullying Week in Dallas, TX.  The week coincides with Ben Cohen’s visit.    Cohen is an international rugby star, who’ll be in town for gay Pride and whose StandUp Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness about anti-LGBT bullying.  See more.

(4)   Medical schools spend little time educating future doctors on the health and medical issues of the LGBT community.  In a study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, of the responding schools, 70% evaluated their own LBGT curricula as ‘fair’, ‘poor’, or ‘very poor.’  More.
