We’re asking youth of all ages to tell us how we can help empower their voices, and how they are making their voices heard.  This isn’t another essay contest – we want to see their creativity through songs, poems, dance performances, video, etc. A compilation of work from around the country will be presented at Bridge in October! This is an incredible opportunity for youth to speak their minds to 600 educators eager to make a difference.

Can you incorporate this project into your summer program?

2.    How can adults/programs/schools help to empower their voices?

Please provide creative responses to the guiding questions, utilizing the following categories and examples.

Laura Galvez and Diego Jimenez, high school students from arc, an afterschool program in Los Angeles, will lead the presentation of the artwork at Bridge in the session Youth Voices: How are young people making themselves heard? This session will focus on student empowerment and its relevance in our youth's education. We will explore how students are making their voices heard, as well as, how educators can help empower young people to speak up and speak out in a positive and effective manner. Student Voice is not only shared vocally but through all forms of expression, including social media. The session will incorporate samples of student voices, shared through varying art disciplines provided by representatives from around the country.

(5) Children's Safety Network releases archived webinar on rural and LGBTQ youth suicide prevention

The March 30 webinar, Youth Suicide Prevention Community of Practice: Special Populations in Youth Suicide Prevention: Rural and LGBTQ Youth presented on two populations at increased risk for youth suicide and shared strategies to reduce these risks. Speakers discussed obstacles and barriers unique to rural populations, reviewed potential success strategies for interventions, and provided an overview of the Trevor Project's education programs.

The presentation also included suggestions for including LGBTQ-specific information in gatekeeper education and best practices for suicide prevention education with youth.

(6) Researchers seek participants: Are you parenting a child who questions their gender? Is your child gender nonconforming? Are you over the age of 18 and have access to a computer with internet access?

If you answered “yes” to the questions above, you could be eligible to participant in a research study.

We are looking for volunteers to take part in a study about parenting children who are gender nonconforming (behave or identify how someone might not traditionally expect a male or female child to behave or identify).

You may be eligible to participate if you:

 Are over the age of 18

 Are a parent or primary caregiver to a child between ages 8 and 18 who does not conform to cultural gender expectations

 Have access to a computer with internet access

 Are willing to be interviewed using online chat about your parenting experiences

As a participant in this study, you would be asked to participate in an online interview lasting approximately 1- 2 hours. Results from this study may increase understanding of the unique needs of families with gender nonconforming children.

For more information about this study, or to volunteer for this study, please contact Dr. Kristen Benson at Kristen.Benson@ndsu.edu or (701) 231-5879
