(3) lovely YouTube clip from filmmaker Greg Smallidge about talking with young children about gender

Check out this 1 minute 20 second clip of my friends Sheila and Fred Capestany talking about playing the board game Life with their children (they had two sons and had just adopted their daughter). Would be a great conversation starter for a Family & Consumer Science class or a Social Studies or Psychology or Child Development class. Go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXN2bb1012Y

(5) Girl Scouts and transgender children

Many of you will have heard, in January, of 7-year old Bobby Montoya who identifies as a girl and wanted to join her local Girl Scout troop. Their accepting her as a member prompted national debate and a cookie boycott and it prompted others (like me) to buy cookies in her honor and in honor of the Girl Scouts doing the right thing by welcoming Bobby.

You can thank the Girl Scouts here: http://www.girlscouts.org/contact/email.asp
Safe Schools Coalition co-chair Michelle Munro sent this message of thanks to the Girl Scouts (their response follows her message):

I am drawn to the acts of heroism that occur quietly, in our everyday lives. I believe the little girl who identifies as transgendered, her family, their GSA troop, council and national leaders exhibited that type of heroism by wanting and then allowing, the participation in a simple club. I was a GS as a child and hadn't thought of that in years. Now, I feel proud to have that affiliation.

Thank you for your message to Girl Scouts of the USA.   We appreciate your interest and kind words.  Girl Scouts of the USA is an inclusive organization, and we welcome all girls in kindergarten through 12th grade as members. Acceptance of transgender youth is handled on a case-by-case basis, with the welfare and best interests of the child in question as a top priority.

Thanks again for contacting Girl Scouts.
