Dear Safe Schools Coalition Members and Friends:

2nd Edition of High School FLASH curriculum now online

Public Health - Seattle & King County is proud to announce the release of High School FLASH!

The Family Life and Sexual Health (FLASH) curriculum is a comprehensive sexual health education program for grades 4 – 12 and special education. For 26 years, King County has been providing FLASH as a resource for schools. The new High School FLASH replaces 9/10 FLASH and 11/12 FLASH.

FLASH continues to be available free online and in printed form below cost. Download or order today at www.kingcounty.gov/health/FLASH. The older 9/10 FLASH and 11/12 FLASH will be archived online until February 1, 2012.

The primary goals of High School FLASH are to prevent teen pregnancy, STDs including HIV, and sexual violence; and to improve family communication about sexual health. Lessons are based on the latest research within these fields. A rigorous outside evaluation of High School FLASH is scheduled to begin in fall 2011.

The new High School FLASH consists of 15 core lessons, 4 additional enrichment days, and 4 new appendices. For the first time, materials for families will be available free online in English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese and Arabic. FLASH continues to adhere to Washington state guidelines and national health/medical standards.

You will also find these new resources on the FLASH website:

In addition to its widespread use within Washington State, the FLASH curriculum has been implemented in 40 states, adapted for use in several countries, including Aruba, Australia, Botswana, Canada, China, Ghana, Indonesia, Israel, Mexico, Nigeria, St. Lucia, Solomon Islands, United Kingdom, Viet Nam, and Zimbabwe, and translated into Braille and Chinese. Additionally, FLASH is used in home settings, faith-based programs and community organizations.

Thank you to the awesome team of authors responsible for the new High School FLASH: Cathy Aby, Erin Casey, Andrea Gerber, Kari Kesler, Mo Lewis, Rebecca Milliman, Brett Niessen, Lindsay Palmer, Beth Reis, Becky Reitzes, Beverly Sims, Celia Thomas, and illustrator, Dærick Gröss, Sr.

Please visit www.kingcounty.gov/health/FLASH to download FLASH at no cost or to order your printed copy today.
