Gay-Straight Alliance Network (GSA Network) is a statewide, youth-driven, social justice organization based in San Francisco that empowers youth activists fighting homophobia and transphobia in high schools and middle schools. GSA clubs provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth who are facing pervasive discrimination and harassment at school. As a non-profit organization formed in 1998, GSA Network provides resources, training, and grassroots organizing support to clubs working to educate schools about LGBT issues and organize for social change. GSA Network currently runs a network of more than 790 GSA clubs throughout California.

A demonstrated passion for LGBTQ youth leadership and empowerment, an understanding of youth culture, and commitment to social change is required for all positions at GSA Network.

GSA Research and Policy Intern

The GSA Network Research and Policy internship is focused on several policy issues related to GSA Network€™s safe schools work. The Policy and Research Intern will work closely with the Advocacy Program Manager on a series of research and policy analysis projects that impact student safety in California.

Job Status: Volunteer/Internship

Work Schedule: 10-15 hrs, flexible

Job Duties:

·       Assist in CA School District policy research

·       Assist with data analysis and cleaning      

·       Work with GSA Network staff to produce policy analysis reports

Qualifications:

·       Proven quantitative research abilities

·       Familiarity with education code or school district policies a plus

·       Excellent attention to detail

·       Solid time management skills

·       Strong oral and excellent written communication skills

·       Demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-oppression work, and LGBTQ rights     

·       Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and with people from a variety of different racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, gender, and generational backgrounds 

GSA Events Intern

The GSA Events Intern is responsible for assisting the GSA Network Program team in preparing for successfully executing program events. These events vary in size depending on the time of year and range from GSA Network€™s Pride contingent to Summer Camp to a Lobby Day at the Capitol. This intern will work closely with program staff to learn the ins and outs of running a successful LGBT youth program. A demonstrated passion for LGBTQ youth leadership and empowerment, an understanding of youth culture, and commitment to social change is required for all positions at GSA Network.

Job Status: Volunteer/Internship

Work Schedule: 10-15 hrs, flexible

Job Duties:

·       Support GSA Network program staff with the following events:

·       GSA Pride Contingent (summer internship) Summer Camp (summer internship) Youth Empowerment Summit (fall internship) Queer Youth Advocacy Day (spring internship)

·       Process pre-event registrations

·       Assist with onsite registration if applicable

·       Assist with responding to or fulfill requests for event info

·       Post event data entry

GSA Member Services Intern

The GSA Member Services Intern is responsible for assisting the Administrative Manager in maintaining the data for and responding to resource requests from GSA clubs all over the state. The intern is also responsible for providing administrative assistance to the GSA Network Management team. Interns in this position will gain concrete skills for careers in Member or Client Services and Non-Profit Administration. This internship is ideal for someone interested in an entry-level nonprofit Administrative position. A demonstrated passion for LGBTQ youth leadership and empowerment, an understanding of youth culture, and commitment to social change is required for all positions at GSA Network.

Job Status: Volunteer/Internship

Work Schedule: 10-15 hrs, flexible

Job Duties:

·       Maintain and update accurate records of existing GSA clubs      

·       Process new GSA registrations and ensure new GSAs have a positive experience joining GSA Network  

·       Respond to or fulfill requests for materials, resources, and poster orders   

·       Data Management

·       Help Prepare E-Blasts to GSAs and our weekly GSA Network News

Skills Gained at the end of this Assignment:

·       Basic Administrative skills

New Media and Design Intern Job Description

The GSA Network New Media and Design Intern will work with the Communications Manager to maintain GSA Network€™s presence online through new media. Additionally this intern will work with the GSA Network management team to maintain GSA Network€™s brand identity while increasing online visibility. Some graphic art/design may also be needed. A qualified candidate should demonstrate either a familiarity with Web 2.0 or with graphic design software. An ideal candidate will have some experience with both. Some writing may be required with the assistance of the Communications Manager. A demonstrated passion for LGBTQ youth leadership and empowerment, an understanding of youth culture, and commitment to social change is required for all positions at GSA Network.

Job Status: Volunteer/Internship

Work Schedule: 10-15 hrs, flexible

Job Duties:

·       Social Media outreach to increase web 2.0 presence

·       Assist in maintaining GSA Network€™s new media and Web 2.0 presence including:

·       Updating GSA Network€™s Blog Uploading Spotlight Videos Promoting GSA Network€™s Facebook FanPages Updating Facebook Cause Tweets via Twitter

·       Assist in designing online survey tools

·       Manage photo gallery online for GSA Network events      

·       Produce graphic design as required for GSA Network events        

Qualifications:

·       Must be an enthusiastic user of Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube and/or other Web 2.0 tools          

·       Must be familiar with the process of creating and customizing content on the above sites

·       Blogging experience highly desired

·       Familiarity with Drupal/ CiviCRM websites a plus

·       Familiarity with Photoshop, Indesign or similar design program   

·       Excellent attention to detail

Administrative Assistant Intern

The Administrative Assistant Intern will be responsible for efficient maintenance of the NARAL Pro-Choice Washington office space, database management, and other clerical work.  This position will be the first person people will seen when arriving at the NARAL Pro-Choice Washington office and will give the intern hands-on experience with the daily business of a small non-profit organization.

Available:  Ongoing; minimum 3 month commitment

Hours: 15-25hours a week to be completed within these days and times:  M-TH 9am €“ 7pm, Friday 9am - 5pm

Primary Responsibilities:

·       Track donations, maintain up to date records

·       Assist with database maintenance, input of pledges, make address corrections, and work with administrative team to improve coding system.

·       Organize and maintain the office and the storerooms in an efficient and functional manner.

·       Assist with ordering office supplies

·       Answer phones and direct calls appropriately

·       Clerical

·       Assist office administrator and other NARAL staff as needed

Qualifications:

·       Strong personal commitment to a woman€™s right to choose

·       Strong computer skills

·       Must be comfortable calling members and supporters

Auction Intern

Intern position will directly assist Auction Coordinator & Deputy Development Director with all Auction related activities from design of evening€™s catalog to tracking and organizing items, donors, and RSVPs. 

Position Duration: Summer 2011, Longer if intern is available

Supervises: Potential volunteer supervision

Hours: Minimum of 10 hours per week, flexible schedule M-Th 10am €“ 7pm, F 10am €“ 5pm

Primary Responsibilities:

·       Make phone calls for Auction development and fundraising

·       Track donations, maintain up to date records in Auction Database

·       Assist with the procurement of auction items, contact and follow up with potential donors and help to pick-up items

·       Assist with design of all publicity materials

·       Respond to and track people who RSVP for event

·       Assist Development staff as necessary with other tasks

Qualifications:

·       Excellent phone skills, willingness to make phone calls (non-negotiable)

·       Willingness to and comfort calling strangers and being persistent

·       Strong personal commitment to a woman€™s right to choose

·       Strong computer skills including Word and Excel as well as PageMaker, Photoshop and Access  requested

·       Experience with events (auction, theatrical, promotional, etc) preferred

 

Event Planning Intern

Intern position will directly assist the Deputy Development Director in planning and executing NARAL Pro-Choice Washington events such as house parties, Liberty Ball Auction and Pro-Choice Pop Star. Duties will range from administrative office tasks, event logistics, participant turn-out and working on the day of the events.

Available: Starting ASAP for a 3 months commitment. Candidates who can commit longer than 3 months are encouraged to apply.

Hours: 8-15 hours per week, flexible schedule Mon-Thurs 10:30am €“ 8pm, F 10:30-3:30pm. At least one evening per week strongly preferred. 

Primary Responsibilities:

·       Help with event logistics.  

·       Help to publicize the event, work with staff to determine creative ways to get the word out.

·       Make outreach phone calls to previous attendees, NARAL volunteers, donors and allies. 

·       Track RSVPs and make follow up phone calls to invitees.

·       Help in hiring entertainment for events.

·       Help procure contest prizes.

Qualifications:

·       Excellent verbal communication skills.

·       Willingness to call NARAL supporters and allies on the phone.

·       Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.

·       Outgoing personality.

·       Strong personal commitment to a woman€™s right to choose

Grassroots Organizing Intern

The Grassroots Organizing Intern will work in the office one or two days a week to recruit volunteers for our booth at 4 major summer festivals and will also help prepare materials and supplies for each festival. In addition the intern will be required to attend the 4 tabling events listed above. At the events the intern will be working on outreach and base building by gathering petition signatures and running our information booth.  This will include large, local festivals such as The U District StreetFair, Fremont Fair, and Seattle Pride. 

Supervises:  Volunteers

Hours:  10-20 hours a week. Must be available the following weekends for at least a portion of each day: May 21 €“ 22, June 18 €“ 19, June 25 -26 and July 30 - 31

Primary Responsibilities:

·       Dedicate office time to volunteer recruitment and outreach.

·       Logistics planning for tabling events.

·       Serve as staff at signature collecting events

·       Set up and take down booth at fairs.

·       Collect and track the number of signatures set as the event€™s goal.

·       Proactively approach strangers to sign petitions and train volunteers to do the same.

·       Orient and supervise volunteers

·       Oversee tabling supplies and restock as needed.

·       Report to Volunteer and Youth Programs Coordinator at the conclusion of each weekend.

·       Think of creative ways to make our table/booth fun, interactive, and approachable. 

Qualifications:

·       Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment.

·       Good oral and written communication skills.

·       Must be outgoing and assertive.

·       Commitment to the protection of the fundamental right to choose a safe, legal abortion and the full range of reproductive choices.

 

Volunteer & Youth Programs Intern

Volunteers play an integral role in all of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington€™s work.  The Volunteer and Youth Programs Assistant will be responsible for assisting in recruiting and scheduling of volunteers for all NARAL events and office activities.

Available: Starting ASAP for a 3 months commitment. Candidates who can commit longer than 3 months are encouraged to apply.

Hours: 8 - 12 hours per week, M-F, flexible schedule, some evenings preferred  

Primary Responsibilities:

·       Recruit volunteers and interns for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington using a combination of telephone, internet, and in-person tactics.  

·       Follow up with volunteer and internship inquires in a timely manner.

·       Make volunteer reminder phone calls, send our reminder postcards and e-mails.

·       Help greet and supervise volunteer activities in the office.

·       Data Entry €“ track volunteer actions in database.

·       Assist Volunteer & Youth Programs Coordinator with other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications:

·       Willingness to and comfort calling strangers

·       Basic computer skills €“ (Microsoft Word and Database experience is a plus)

·       Outgoing personality and willingness to work with volunteers

·       Strong personal commitment to a woman€™s right to choose
