Dear Safe Schools Coalition Members and Friends:

(1) Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Children in Primary Schools (Feb 5; Seattle, WA)
(2) Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Children in Secondary Schools (Feb 19; Seattle, WA)

(3) Anti-bullying forum hosted by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (Feb 7; Montclair, NJ)

****************************************
(1) Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Children in Primary Schools (Feb 5; Seattle, WA)

10am - 1pm

John Stanford Center

2445 3rd Avenue South

Seattle, WA 98134

Registration $95.00 (Students $70)

This is a professional level workshop that allows teachers, administrators, support staff, and students entering the education field to gain an understanding of gender non-conformity and transgender issues as they relate to primary school age children (K-5). Topics covered include:

  • Gender identity and expression are aspects of identity that are protected by both WA state anti-discrimination code and anti-bullying legislation passed in 2002. What, exactly, does this mean and how does it apply to elementary school classrooms?
  • What do you do if you feel you have a transgender student in your class?
  • How do you address questions from students? Other parents?
  • What about bathroom usage and other gender-segregated spaces?
  • What are some ways to address possible teasing and bullying?
  • Are some students too young?  How can you discuss this issue in age-appropriate ways?

Participants will learn how to create a safe learning environment for all students regardless of gender identity and/or expression including language for school mission statements, student handbooks, and lesson planning. Participants will become more confident in addressing questions or concerns from both students and parents and ultimately create a more inclusive environment for all.

(2) Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Children in Secondary Schools (Feb 19; Seattle, WA)

10am - 1pm

John Stanford Center

2445 3rd Avenue South

Seattle, WA 98134

Registration $95.00 (Students $70)

This is a professional level workshop that allows teachers, administrators, and support staff to gain an understanding of gender non-conformity and transgender issues as they relate to middle and high school students. Topics covered include:

  • What do you do if you feel you have a transgender student in your class?
  • How do you know if this student is transgender, or gay or lesbian€”what€™s the difference anyway?
  • Could this be a phase? What if a student wants to come to school as the €˜opposite€™ gender?
  • Gender identity and expression, as well as sexual orientation, are aspects of identity that are protected by both WA state anti-discrimination code and anti-bullying legislation.
  • What, exactly, does this mean and how does it apply to your school community?
  • How do you address questions from students or parents?
  • What are some ways to address possible teasing and bullying? How do you support
  •  a student and maintain a safe learning environment?

Participants will learn the distinctions between gender identity and sexual orientation, and also ways in which they are interwoven, for teens and young adults. This workshop will assist participants in creating a safer learning environment for all students regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, or gender expression including language for school mission statements and student handbooks. Participants will

become more confident in addressing questions from both students and parents, and ultimately, finding solutions to create a more inclusive environment for all.

NOTE: Also open to students in related fields
