(2) Safe Schools Coalition mourns the passing of Carolyn Wagner, LGBT Advocate and Civil Rights Pioneer
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO FAMILIES UNITED AGAINST HATE (FUAH) AND FRIENDS OF CAROLYN WAGNER:

On January 18, 2011 the world lost a civil rights pioneer and strong voice for equality. Carolyn Wagner fought every day to create a world where equality would become a reality for all, no matter their sexual orientation, gender identity, race or life circumstances. Her path in life was difficult but she never wavered in her dedication and love for the many communities she advocated so powerfully for until she took her last breath. Nothing could ever stop her from fighting for her family, her friends and her community. Plenty of people tried to stop her, but never with any success. Carolyn's heart, mind and arms were always open and we will miss her powerful embrace, we know her legacy will never die as long as we carry the spirit of her love within us, and take action with as much courage, humor, and wisdom as she did. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband and children and the hundreds and thousands of people whose lives she touched. She will always be with us.€ť

Bill Wagner said: Carolyn will be remembered as an activist and civil rights hero to many, but for me she was simply the love of my life, my best friend and an amazing mother to our children. I will miss her beautiful smile, her raucous and infectious laugh and most of all her loving heart.

The memorial was held on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center  621 E 4th Street; Tulsa, OK.

Carolyn Wagner was a co-founder of Families United Against Hate and a past Vice-President of the PFLAG National Board of Directors - both are member organizations of Safe Schools Coalition.

Carolyn championed her son William's Title IX rights after a violent anti-gay attack at his school and her successful complaint to the Office for Civil Rights against the Fayetteville Arkansas School District was followed by a major win at the federal level when the Supreme Court voted to uphold Title IX rights for students, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or gender identity.

(3) Reminder: Safe Schools Coalition's Fiscal Agent Has Changed as of 01/19/11
For six years Lifelong AIDS Alliance served as fiscal agent to the Safe Schools Coalition, pro bono. On behalf of all the other member organizations, we want to thank them SO MUCH for these years of handling our bookkeeping/accounting functions!

As of January 19th we have been taken under the wing of another member organization, the newly merged (as of January 1st) Rosehedge/Multifaith Works. Both the merging organizations, Rosehedge and Multifaith Works, are longtime health and human service providers on the AIDS Care Continuum in King County, WA. As our new fiscal agent, Rosehedge/Multifaith Works has agreed to take over all the functions Lifelong AIDS has been handling. The Coalition's Leadership Team is VERY grateful to Rosehedge/Multifaith Works for taking the next turn at this role.

What's it mean to you? As of 1/19/2011 ...

(4) Action Alert: Ask Massachusetts to modify the anti-bullying law regarding privacy rights of the offender so that all information regarding disciplinary action is made available to the victim's family.
Ask Massachusetts to modify the anti-bullying law regarding privacy rights of the offender
Targeting: The Governor of MA, The MA State Senate, The MA State House, and Gov. Deval Patrick (MA)
Started by: Kristen Gard

The anti-bullying laws are a step in the right direction.  One major flaw with the law is the fact that the bully is entitled to privacy rights.  The child that is bullied as well as their family does not receive complete feedback after the offense has been reported.  You may never know if it is in fact addressed and what, if anything, the punishment will be.  Massachusetts may have the strictest anti-bullying law in the U.S.; however, changes need to be made.  If a child injures, bullies or threatens another child, they should not have certain rights to privacy.  All information regarding disciplinary action should be made available to the victim's family.  Let's hold everyone to the highest standards.

Petition Text

Petition to modify the anti-bullying law.

To Whom it May Concern,

Please modify the anti-bullying law in Massachusetts for the victim and family to have access to disciplinary action taken against the offender.  Let's hold everyone to a higher standard and help provide closure for the victim.
