Federally-Funded Project Recruiting Washington State High Schools for Study of Home-Grown Sex Ed Curriculum

Seattle CHT Resource Group (CRG) and the Healthy Youth Alliance (HYA) are partnering with Mathematica Policy Research to examine the effectiveness of a comprehensive sexual health education curriculum developed and published by Public Health Seattle & King County. With funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS), this study will assess the impact of the Family Life and Sexual Health (FLASH) curriculum on ninth grade students. This study is part of a larger USDHHS effort to identify evidence-based sexual health education curricula that make a positive difference in preventing teen pregnancy and related problems.

Mathematica will assign selected high schools to either an “early” or “later” implementation group, using a random process like a lottery or coin toss. Early schools will implement the 19-lesson High School FLASH curriculum in fall 2011; later schools will implement it in fall 2013. By comparing data collected from youth in both groups of schools, Mathematica will be able to measure how well FLASH helps teens delay sexual activity, reduce risky sexual behaviors, avoid sexual violence, and prevent pregnancy and HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases.

High schools selected for the study will receive FLASH training for school staff and the FLASH curriculum and related materials at no cost. In addition, all participating schools will receive between $2,000 and $3,000 as compensation for their involvement in the study.

To inquire about the study and how to participate, please contact Jeana Johnson of CRG at mailto:jeana@jba-cht.com or 206.447.9538.

HYA is a coalition of organizations working with communities and families to improve the health of all young people in Washington State. The Alliance aims to contribute to reduced rates of unintended pregnancy and STD/HIV infection among Washington State youth each year by promoting proven and effective sexual health programs.

Mathematica Policy Research is a nationally-known research and evaluation firm based in Princeton, New Jersey.
